Primitive XXXX

Originally recorded onto multi-track cassette in 1984, at a time of international conflict and jeopardy, Primitive introduced a very new sound to the band’s output. Using a Drumatix drum machine for the first time, they were able to incorporate complex rhythm patterns to underpin their desire to produce more “difficult” music. For this recording, they also limited the instrumentation used during the sessions – using only 2 electric guitars and a bass guitar (fretted and fretless) alongside the drum machine as well as sparse vocal textures. Lyrics were only used on one song.

After its completion, external demands meant that the band folded and didn’t reform for 35 years! The original files were transferred from cassette and digitised in 2011. This new version has been meticulously remastered by David Reid and gives listeners a chance to hear – for the first time – how this band was evolving 40 years ago.

WHO ARE ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION?

We are a group of musicians who first played together in 1980 and, after a gap of 35 years, reformed in 2019. Back then, we played University gigs & released 3 self-produced albums of original music before disbanding to have “real lives”! Personnel are David Reid [Guitar, Keyboards]; Janette Kidd [Bass, Vocals, Keyboards] and Brian Kidd [Guitar, Guitar Synthesizer, Percussion, Drumbox Programming and Trumpet/Flugelhorn].
That first new album, 'The Three Body Problem', was released on 21/06/21 with encouragingly positive feedback.

Working on 'The Three Body Problem' was such an exciting and enjoyable project, it seemed inevitable that more would follow. 'Afterword' was released on 01/09/23, but what should we do next? We decided to remix and remaster an early recording made in 1984 on a Fostex X15 4-track cassette tape recorder - 'Primitive'. This recording is now 40 years old and raises interesting speculations about what might have happened if the band hadn't taken a very long break from recording.
